Investment Opportunities in Ethiopia
The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is committed to
ensuring, that private capital plays a significant role in the economy. To this end,
it has eliminated discriminatory tax, credit, and foreign trade treatment of the private
sector, simplified administrative procedures, and established a clear consistent set of
rules regulating business activities.
The new investment proclamation, some fields remain off limits for foreign investors:
- Financial services (banking and insurance),
- Large-scale power production (over 20 megawatts)
- Telecommunications
- Other public utilities
- Small-scale personal services
Some other areas are limited for foreign investors acting in partnership with domestic
investors, such as
- Engineering
- Metallurgical
- Pharmaceutical
- Basic chemical
- Petrochemical
- Fertilizer industries.
Foreign firms are welcome to invest in privatisation efforts of the Ethiopian government, although in some instance it promotes joint venture with Ethiopian private concern rather than outright sales. Foreign forms participate through consultancy services preparatory to privatisation or through tendering on advertised privatisation opportunities.
